obstacles

Things blocking progress

Obstacles are things that stand in the way of progress or achievement.

The word applies to physical barriers—a fallen tree blocking a road, a fence around a property—and to abstract hindrances: financial obstacles, bureaucratic obstacles, obstacles to peace.

An obstacle course presents a series of physical challenges to navigate.

To overcome obstacles is to find ways past them.
