countermove

Strategic reactive play

A countermove is an action taken in response to an opponent's move, intended to neutralize or offset it.

The word comes from chess and other strategic games but extends to any competitive situation: The company's price cut was a countermove against their rival's new product launch.

To countermove is to make such a response.
