newsgroup

Internet discussion board

A newsgroup is a discussion forum on the Usenet system, organized by topic and accessed through specialized software.

Users post messages that others can read and reply to, creating threaded conversations.

Newsgroups flourished in the 1980s and 1990s before web-based forums largely replaced them: I found the answer in a Linux newsgroup.

The naming convention uses dots to indicate hierarchy: comp.lang.python, rec.arts.movies.
