chat room
Online conversation space
A chat room is a virtual space on the internet where multiple users can exchange text messages in real time.
The format was central to early online culture in the 1990s, when services like AOL hosted thousands of topic-based rooms.
Though largely displaced by social media and messaging apps, the term persists: I met my husband in a chat room back in 1998.
