neutrophils
First-responder blood cells
Neutrophils are white blood cells that form the immune system's first line of defense against infection.
They're the most abundant type of white blood cell, rushing to sites of injury or invasion to engulf and destroy bacteria and other pathogens.
A neutrophil count appears in standard blood tests; abnormal levels can indicate infection, inflammation, or bone marrow disorders.
