white blood cell

Body's infection fighter

A white blood cell is a cell in the blood that fights infection and disease.

Unlike red blood cells, which carry oxygen, white blood cells are part of the immune system—they identify and destroy bacteria, viruses, and other foreign invaders.

A high white blood cell count often indicates infection or inflammation.
