extravasation

Vessel contents escaping

Extravasation is the leakage of fluid from its proper vessel into surrounding tissue.

In medicine, blood extravasates when it escapes from a ruptured vessel, and IV drugs extravasate when they leak from a vein into tissue—sometimes causing serious damage: The chemotherapy extravasation required immediate treatment.

The term extends to any fluid escaping its intended channel, including lava flowing from a volcanic vent.
