basophils

Histamine-releasing blood cells

Basophils are white blood cells containing granules that stain with basic dyes.

They're the rarest type of white blood cell, making up less than one percent of circulating blood cells.

Basophils release histamine and other chemicals during allergic reactions and inflammatory responses: The patient's basophil count was elevated.
