empyema
Pus-filled cavity
Empyema is the accumulation of pus in a body cavity, most commonly the pleural space between the lungs and chest wall.
It typically develops as a complication of pneumonia or lung infection: The chest X-ray revealed an empyema requiring drainage.
Treatment usually involves antibiotics and removing the infected fluid.
