red cells

Hemoglobin's home vessels

Red cells are the oxygen-carrying components of blood, more formally called red blood cells or erythrocytes.

They contain hemoglobin, which binds oxygen in the lungs and releases it throughout the body.

A low red cell count indicates anemia: Her red cells were dangerously low after the surgery.
