flechette
Small steel projectile
A flechette is a small dart-shaped projectile, typically steel, designed to be released in large numbers from artillery shells, bombs, or specialized firearms.
The name comes from French for "little arrow." Flechettes were used in World War I trench warfare and later conflicts, dropped or fired en masse to saturate an area: The shells burst overhead, releasing thousands of flechettes.
