mountain ash

Red-berried rowan

Mountain ash is any of several trees or shrubs with compound leaves and clusters of bright red or orange berries, resembling the ash tree in leaf shape though unrelated to true ashes.

The European species is also called rowan.

The berries attract birds and have traditional uses in jellies and folk medicine: Mountain ash berries hung heavy in the autumn light.
