valley oak
Sprawling deciduous hardwood
Valley oak is the largest North American oak species, native to California's valleys and foothills.
It grows with a massive trunk and wide-spreading branches, often in open savannas and grasslands.
The trees are long-lived and drought-tolerant, once central to indigenous Californian food systems for their acorns: A lone valley oak stood in the middle of the field.
