kapoks

Tropical seed fluff

Kapoks are tropical trees of the genus *Ceiba*, or the silky fiber harvested from their seed pods.

The fiber is lightweight, water-resistant, and buoyant, traditionally used for stuffing pillows, mattresses, and life jackets: The kapoks in the old life vests had degraded over time.

The singular kapok refers to either the tree or the material.
