typecasting

Repeated role assignment

Typecasting is the practice of repeatedly casting an actor in the same kind of role—the tough guy, the ditzy blonde, the villain—until they become identified with that type and struggle to get different parts: After playing so many mobsters, he was hopelessly typecast.

The term extends beyond acting to any situation where someone is persistently categorized based on past performance or perceived traits: She felt typecast as the office tech person just because she'd fixed the printer once.
