painted lady

Migratory orange butterfly

A painted lady is a butterfly with orange, black, and white markings, found across most of the world.

The term also refers to a Victorian house painted in three or more colors to highlight its ornamental details, especially in San Francisco: The painted ladies of Alamo Square are among the city's most photographed landmarks.

In older slang, a painted lady was a prostitute—a woman who wore conspicuous makeup.
