minstrel
Itinerant court entertainer
A minstrel was a medieval entertainer who performed songs, poetry, and music, often traveling from court to court or town to town.
The word evokes romantic images of wandering musicians with lutes.
In American history, minstrel specifically refers to performers in minstrel shows—19th and early 20th century entertainment featuring white performers in blackface (and later Black performers) using racist stereotypes.
That legacy makes the word fraught when applied to any performer today.
