tabor
One-handed medieval percussion
A tabor is a small drum, typically played with one hand while the other hand plays a pipe or fife.
The pairing was common in medieval and Renaissance music, allowing a single musician to provide both melody and rhythm: The tabor and pipe accompanied the dancers.
The word survives mainly in historical or folk music contexts.
