minstrel shows
Blackface variety performances
Minstrel shows were a form of American entertainment from the 1830s through the early 20th century featuring white performers in blackface makeup caricaturing Black people through exaggerated dialect, buffoonish behavior, and stereotyped songs and dances.
The format established racist tropes—the lazy slave, the happy plantation—that persisted in American media for generations.
Black performers later participated in the genre, often required to wear blackface themselves.
The term now evokes this history of degrading racial mockery.
