skald

Viking court poet

A skald is a poet in ancient Scandinavian tradition, particularly one attached to a Norse or Icelandic court who composed and recited verses honoring kings and heroes.

Skalds were distinct from anonymous saga-tellers—they were named artists whose intricate, alliterative verse celebrated battles, voyages, and noble deeds.

The word survives mainly in historical and literary contexts.
