court composer
Royal musical employee
A court composer was a musician employed by royalty or nobility to create music for their household.
The position offered financial security and prestige but required producing works on demand—operas for celebrations, chamber music for entertainment, sacred works for chapel services.
Bach served as court composer to the Prince of Anhalt-Köthen; Haydn spent decades in service to the Esterházy family.
The role largely disappeared as aristocratic patronage gave way to public concerts and commercial music publishing.
