minstrels

Wandering court entertainers

Minstrels were medieval European entertainers who performed songs, music, and poetry, often traveling between noble courts and public gatherings.

The word later attached to a specific American entertainment form: white performers in blackface caricaturing Black people through song and comedy, popular from the 1830s through the early 20th century.

This minstrel show tradition is now recognized as deeply racist, though its influence shaped American popular music.

Wandering minstrels entertained the court.
