maestro

Baton-wielding virtuoso

A maestro is a master musician, especially a conductor or composer of classical music: The maestro raised his baton.

The Italian word for master has been borrowed into English for distinguished artists generally, often with a hint of playful reverence: He's the maestro of horror films.

The plural is maestros or maestri.
