croaker

Fish that grunts

A croaker is any of several fish that make drumming or croaking sounds, particularly members of the drum family found in Atlantic and Gulf coastal waters.

The term extends to any habitual complainer or pessimist—someone who croaks about problems: Don't be such a croaker; we'll figure it out.

In dated slang, a croaker is a doctor, from the grim prognoses they sometimes deliver.
