diva

Temperamental female singer

A diva is a celebrated female opera singer, from the Italian word for goddess.

The term extends to any distinguished woman in entertainment—a pop diva, a diva of Broadway.

In contemporary use, diva often describes someone dramatic, demanding, or temperamental: She's being a total diva about the seating arrangements.

The negative sense has largely overtaken the complimentary one.
