clefs

Pitch-marking music symbols

Clefs are the symbols placed at the beginning of a musical staff to indicate the pitch of written notes.

The treble clef (G clef) and bass clef (F clef) are most common; the alto and tenor clefs (C clefs) appear in orchestral music.

Each clef assigns a specific pitch to one line of the staff, from which all other notes are read.
