mezzosoprano
Between alto, soprano
A mezzosoprano is a female singing voice between soprano and contralto—lower and richer than soprano, higher than contralto.
The term comes from Italian, meaning "middle soprano." Mezzosoprano roles in opera often include complex characters: villains, seductresses, mothers, and trouser roles where women play young men.
Also spelled mezzo-soprano or shortened to mezzo.
