mental disease
Psychological health condition
Mental disease is an older term for what is now more commonly called mental illness or mental disorder—a condition affecting a person's thinking, mood, or behavior that causes distress or impairs functioning.
The term appears frequently in legal contexts, particularly in older statutes concerning competency or criminal responsibility.
In clinical and everyday usage, mental illness has largely replaced mental disease, which can sound dated or stigmatizing.
