alibi

Claim of absence

An alibi is evidence or a claim that a person was somewhere else when a crime or other event occurred, making their involvement impossible.

His alibi checked out—he was in Chicago when the robbery happened.

More loosely, alibi serves as an excuse or justification for any failure or wrongdoing: She always has an alibi for why she's late.

As a verb, to alibi is to provide such an excuse, often with a suggestion of evasiveness.
