personality disorder
Pathological character patterns
A personality disorder is a persistent pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that deviates significantly from cultural expectations and causes distress or impaired functioning.
Unlike mood disorders or anxiety, which feel alien to the sufferer, personality disorders are woven into how someone experiences themselves and relates to others.
Psychiatry recognizes several types—borderline, narcissistic, antisocial, avoidant, and others—each with distinct patterns: She was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder after years of unstable relationships and self-harm.
