electroconvulsive
Seizure-inducing psychiatric treatment
Electroconvulsive describes a medical procedure that passes electric current through the brain to induce a brief seizure.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treats severe depression and other psychiatric conditions when other treatments fail: The doctor recommended electroconvulsive therapy after medications proved ineffective.
Once called shock therapy, ECT remains controversial despite evidence of efficacy.
