antipsychotics

Schizophrenia treatment drugs

Antipsychotics are medications used to treat psychosis—the severe mental disturbances involving delusions, hallucinations, or disordered thinking seen in schizophrenia and other conditions.

They work primarily by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain.

Older antipsychotics like haloperidol are called "typical"; newer ones like risperidone are "atypical." The doctor prescribed antipsychotics to manage his symptoms.
