mellophones
Band field instruments
Mellophones are brass instruments used primarily in marching bands as a substitute for French horns.
They have a forward-facing bell that projects sound toward the audience, making them better suited for outdoor performance than the French horn's backward-facing design.
The mellophone produces a mellower tone than a trumpet but brighter than a true horn: The mellophone section carried the countermelody across the football field.
