mellophone
Portable horn variant
A mellophone is a brass instrument pitched in F or E-flat, used primarily in marching bands and drum corps as a more practical substitute for the French horn.
Its forward-facing bell projects sound toward the audience rather than backward like a concert horn, making it ideal for outdoor performance.
The mellophone has a conical bore and produces a mellow, horn-like tone, though with less complexity than its orchestral cousin.
The mellophone section carried the melody during the halftime show.
