sousaphones

Circular brass instruments

A sousaphone is a large brass instrument in the tuba family, designed to wrap around the player's body with a forward-facing bell.

Built for marching bands, it distributes weight across the shoulders while projecting sound toward the audience: The sousaphones anchored the brass section as the band paraded down Main Street.

Named after bandmaster John Philip Sousa.
