string instruments

Orchestra's wooden voices

String instruments are musical instruments that produce sound from vibrating strings.

The strings may be plucked (guitar, harp, banjo), bowed (violin, cello, double bass), or struck (piano, hammered dulcimer).

In orchestral usage, "the strings" refers specifically to the bowed instruments that form the ensemble's core: The strings carry the melody in the second movement.
