A royal decree is an official order issued by a monarch, carrying the force of law.
Unlike legislation passed by a parliament, a decree comes directly from sovereign authority: The king issued a royal decree banning the practice.
In constitutional monarchies today, royal decrees are largely ceremonial, but historically they shaped taxation, war, and succession.
