loggias

Open-sided covered porches

Loggias is the plural of loggia, a roofed gallery or arcade open to the air on at least one side.

Common in Italian architecture, loggias provide shaded outdoor space while remaining connected to a building: The villa's loggia overlooked the garden.

In modern usage, a loggia may be any covered outdoor living area, distinguished from a porch by its architectural formality.
