Portable automatic weapon
A light machine gun is an automatic weapon light enough to be carried and operated by a single soldier, as opposed to heavier crew-served machine guns requiring a tripod and multiple operators.
Light machine guns typically fire rifle-caliber ammunition from a magazine or belt and provide sustained suppressive fire for infantry squads: The squad's light machine gun covered their advance.
