blowback

Unintended adverse consequences

Blowback is the unintended negative consequences of a covert operation or policy, especially when those consequences rebound on the originators.

The CIA coined the term for operations that backfire: The agency warned of potential blowback from arming the rebels.

In firearms, blowback refers to gases or debris expelled backward toward the shooter, or a mechanism where expanding gases cycle the action.
