select-fire
Multiple firing modes
Select-fire describes a firearm capable of switching between firing modes—typically between semiautomatic (one shot per trigger pull) and fully automatic (continuous fire while the trigger is held).
Military rifles like the M16 are select-fire, with a selector switch to choose the mode: The weapon's select-fire capability allows soldiers to adapt to different combat situations.
