garrote

Assassin's silent cord

A garrote is a device for strangling—traditionally a cord, wire, or metal collar tightened around the victim's neck.

The word also refers to execution by this method, once practiced in Spain.

As a verb, to garrote is to strangle someone this way: The assassin garroted the guard from behind.

Also spelled garrotte.
