larynx

Where speech originates

The larynx is the hollow muscular organ in the throat that contains the vocal cords and produces voice.

Air from the lungs passes through the larynx, vibrating the cords to create sound.

The larynx also prevents food from entering the airway during swallowing.

Informally called the voice box.
