laryngitis

Singer's dreaded ailment

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx, the part of the throat containing the vocal cords.

The hallmark symptom is hoarseness or complete loss of voice, often accompanied by a dry cough and sore throat.

It typically results from viral infection, overuse of the voice, or irritation: She had laryngitis and could barely whisper.
