glottis

Laryngeal cord gap

The glottis is the opening between the vocal cords in the larynx.

It widens during breathing and narrows during speech, controlling airflow to produce voice.

A glottal stop—the catch in the throat heard in "uh-oh"—occurs when the glottis closes completely then releases.
