phonation
Laryngeal sound production
Phonation is the production of sound by the vocal cords.
When air from the lungs passes through the larynx and causes the vocal folds to vibrate, that's phonation.
The term appears in speech pathology and linguistics: The patient's phonation was strained after surgery.
Breathing and whispering don't involve phonation because the vocal cords aren't vibrating.
