uvula

Mouth's hanging lobe

The uvula is the small, fleshy projection that hangs from the back of the soft palate at the entrance to the throat.

It's visible when you open your mouth wide: The doctor pressed down my tongue to see my uvula.

The uvula plays a role in speech, swallowing, and triggering the gag reflex.
