pyriform sinus

Laryngeal side pocket

The pyriform sinus is one of two pear-shaped recesses in the throat, located on either side of the larynx where the pharynx meets the esophagus.

Food and liquid pass through these channels during swallowing.

In medical contexts, the pyriform sinus is a common site for foreign objects to lodge and for certain cancers to develop.

Also spelled piriform sinus.
