lamellae

Gill tissue folds

Lamellae is the plural of lamella, meaning thin plates, layers, or membranes.

The term appears most often in biology and anatomy: the lamellae of bone tissue, the gill lamellae of mushrooms, the lamellae that give butterfly wings their iridescence.

The microscope revealed delicate lamellae stacked like pages of a book.
