mycelium
Underground mushroom web
Mycelium is the vegetative body of a fungus—a network of thread-like filaments called hyphae that spread through soil, wood, or other material.
What we call mushrooms are just the fruiting bodies; the mycelium is the organism itself, often vast and hidden.
A single mycelium can extend for miles underground: The forest floor is laced with mycelium connecting the trees.
